Halal and Haram

As muslims sometimes it is hard to keep track of hala and Haram in America. So to be helpful we decided to make a list of what is Halal and what it haram. Prophet Muhammed SAW (PBUH) said to his Companion Sa`d ibn Abī Waqqās RA: “O Sa`d! Purify your food, your supplication will be accepted. By the one in whose hand lays the life of Muhammad, verily a servant places a morsel of Haram in his stomach (and as a result) forty days of worship will not be accepted from him.”(Recorded by Imam Tabrani)

 

Bacon: A side of pig meat.

Cholesterol: type of fat always of animal origin. If extracted from Zabiha animal, it is Halal.

Triglyceride: Emulsifier. If of animal origin it should be suspected till the source is known.

Gelatin (Jell-O Gelatin): Usually of animal origin, mostly from pig. If extracted from a dhabiha animal, then it is halal

Glycerol (Glycerin): It could be of animal or plant . If animal source is used, it is suspected.

Hormones: Usually animal hormones are used for human consumption. One has to find out the source before passing a judgment.

Lard: Fat from swine particularly found in the abdominal cavity. Totally Haram for us.

Magnesium Stearate (stearic acid): Used as an active ingredient in medicine tablets. Haram when derived from animal source.

Mono Glycerides: When derived from animal source. (Halal when the source is plant).

Pepsin: A digestive enzyme mostly from pig stomach.

Rennin (Rennet): A protein Enzyme. Not always labeled.   (In most cheeses).

Shortening: Fats and oils of animal origin. Animal/Lard

Vanilla: Extracted using alcohol.

Vitamins: Haram when from animal source. Mostly the source is synthetic or plant and are Halal.

Whey: Used in ice creams and yogurt. Haram when from animal source.
